Children learning through outdoor play at Big Geckos

Childcare for growing confidence — age 2 to school

Big Geckos is a small, homelike childcare and daycare centre in Regent, Whangārei, where children aged 2 to school are genuinely known. Small groups, low ratios and familiar teachers create the space for children to explore, build confidence and develop independence at their own pace. Through play, creativity and Reggio-inspired learning, we help children grow the skills, curiosity and confidence that support a smooth transition to school.

Small-centre relationships

Our small converted-house centre feels cosy, familiar and homelike. Low ratios and small groups help children build close relationships with kaiako, while family-provided lunchboxes maintain familiar food preferences, routines and culture from home.

Primary School Preparation

Learning through real experiences

Daily play and discovery at Big Geckos empower our tamariki to solve problems and master rituals, building brave learners.

We work with families and local primary schools, including Whangārei Primary, to make the move to school thoughtful and familiar. Our focus is confidence, independence and a positive transition.

At Big Geckos, children learn by doing. We explore the neighbourhood on foot, enjoy active outdoor play and discover the world through excursions.

Our team collaborates with families to foster a positive and prepared journey as your child nears their upcoming classroom move.
